For lectures taking place in the 2026-2027 academic year
Qualifications
- Proposals must be submitted by a department chair or center/program director.
- Multiple proposals from a department, center or program will be accepted.
- Lecturers must be:
- Distinguished in their fields
- Outstanding speakers who can address general audiences effectively
- Note: Proposals of individuals from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in their fields are particularly welcome.
- In addition to presenting a public talk, each lecturer generally meets in more informal settings with faculty and students of the nominating department.
- The lecture must be free and open to the public.
- Air travel must be booked in accordance with the university airfare policy.
Proposal Materials
- Proposal letter:
- Describe the lecturer’s academic achievements.
- Describe measures taken to consider lecturers from groups under-represented in the field.
- Identify the type of audience the nominee is expected to attract.
- Name the individual(s) in the department who will arrange logistics of the visit, Hilldale Lecture, and related events.
- Name a department administrator who will administer Hilldale funds supporting the Hilldale Lecture and the presenter’s visit.
- List co-sponsors (as appropriate).
- The lecturer’s curriculum vitae (if available).
Award Funding
Decisions on proposals will be communicated by March each year.
The sponsoring unit(s) is responsible for making all arrangements and paying all expenses up front; funding is provided AFTER the event.
Please note, up to $4,000 of the award may be allocated to the speaker’s honorarium, with the remainder covering allowable expenses. Expenses that do not adhere to university regulations will not be reimbursed.
