Memorial Resolutions

A memorial resolution honors the career of a deceased faculty colleague with a written and oral tribute presented before the Faculty Senate. The memorial resolution is kept as a historical record of the faculty member’s contributions to the university.

Eligibility – A deceased faculty member is eligible for a memorial resolution if they either:

  • Were granted emeritus status and held a faculty title (professor, associate professor, assistant professor) at the time of retirement. Faculty who held an administrative title at the time of retirement must have served as a faculty member prior to holding administrative positions in order to be eligible. -OR-
  • Passed away with an active appointment with a faculty title (professor, associate professor, assistant professor).

Submission – Department chairs identify a memorial resolution committee to prepare the memorial resolution. The memorial resolution committee provides the following to the Office of the Secretary of the Faculty via the submission form below:

  • Memorial resolution (two page maximum single-spaced)
  • Photograph of faculty member
  • 100-word abstract to be read by one of the committee members or a department faculty member
  • Name of the abstract reader

Once the materials are submitted, the Office of the Secretary of the Faculty will work with the memorial resolution committee to schedule the presentation of the memorial resolution at a Faculty Senate meeting. At that time, the department chair should reach out to the next of kin regarding attendance at the Faculty Senate meeting.
